Can I get someone to proofread my essay?
Answer
The university doesn't offer a proofreading service.
Many of the paid proofreading companies that you will find online offer a service which would breach the college definition of plagiarism.
In the first instance, you can submit your written work to Studiosity where it will be read by a specialist and comments on how to make improvements to your work will be made, usually within a few hours. This service is free for all Queen Mary students and is available 24/7. There is a limit of 10 'interactions' per student, per academic year.
You can also get free, extensive advice on academic writing from the Academic Skills Centre.
Their resources page has guidance on many of the most challenging aspects of academic writing.
They also regularly run workshops on aspects of academic writing. You can book a place on one of their upcoming sessions on the workshop calendar.
You can also access one-to-one support on your writing. Staff in the Academic Skills Centre run one-to-one tutorials in which you can get advice on essay planning, tightening up your reasoning and arguments, being critical, editing and other aspects of academic writing.
The Royal Literary Fund Fellows, an independent service run by professional authors, also offer one-to-one tutorials.
These services are focussed on helping you to improve as a writer, rather than on editing your work for you.
